Dr. Sherryl Broverman, associate professor of the practice in Duke University’s Department of Biology and the Duke Global Health Institute, received the 2016 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award for advancing education, global citizenship, and health.
Dr. Broverman works extensively to engage and educate her students about HIV/AIDS in a global context, partnering with universities in Kenya, South Africa, and Uganda. She also helped establish WISER International (Women’s Institute of Secondary Education & Research), a “community development organization focusing on the social empowerment of underprivileged girls through education and health.”
Dr. Broverman was the recipient of NCSCE’s 2015 William E. Bennett Award for Extraordinary Contributions to Citizen Science, and delivered a 2014 SENCER Summer Institute plenary address about how her HIV/AIDS course at Duke led her to a rural community in Kenya.
