Matthew Fisher, Senior Fellow (Assessment: The Scholarship of Learning and Teaching)

Matt is an associate professor of chemistry and chair of the chemistry department at Saint Vincent College. He received a B.A. in biochemistry from Temple University in 1982 and a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1990. After a year on the staff of the Chemistry Learning Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he accepted a position as an assistant professor of chemistry at Randolph-Macon College in the fall of 1991 and came to Saint Vincent in the fall of 1995. In addition to his responsibilities as a faculty member, Matt is a member of the College ’s Biotechnology Advisory Committee, a member of the Executive Committee for the Saint Vincent College Center for Ethics in Community, and is the director of Saint Vincent College’s Teaching Enhancement and Mentoring Program. He has taught two SENCER courses at Saint Vincent: Science and Global Sustainability and Chemistry of Daily Life: Malnutrition and Diabetes (a SENCER model course). Matt has been an active member of the ACS Division of Chemical Education and now serves as a member of the Division Program Committee. In addition, he is a member of the ACS Committee on Environmental Improvement, where he serves as co-chair of the Education Subcommittee. Matt is a 2005 Carnegie Scholar and spent the 2005-2006 academic year working on a project to connect topics in undergraduate biochemistry to public policy, public health, and institutional/personal values in support of integrative learning. As a NCSCE senior fellow, he coordinates the Center’s scholarship of teaching and learning initiative.
